Outside our small safe place flies Mystery... A snake beneath the forest floor, a whisper: Melusine

I know why I have such a strong affinity for Drag Queens and Kings -- I am fascinated with the very idea of people being able to transform, both beautifully and terrifyingly, dramatically into another gender.  Sure there are sexual political reasons why some members of the Gay community choose to dress as the opposite sex, but what about it just being about having fun and giving a great performance?  In honor of Drag History month, as promised, I've decided to dig through my video collection and list off MY favorite movies featuring the glamourous creatures we know and love as "drag."

THE QUEEN (1968)

This trail blazing film, one of the first of its kind, documents the life of a Queen, Sabrina, on her way to take part in a drag pageant in New York city. If you want to truly appreciate the ups and downs of being in drag, especially during a time when it wasn't mainstream, this is a must see film. Juicy tidbit: Andy Warhol actually cameos as a judge! What a treat.

PARIS IS BURNING (1990)

A look back at the late 80's and early 90's when a handful of Black Queens created "voguing" and drag balls , and turned these raucous celebrations into a powerful expression of personal pride.

VEGAS IN SPACE (1991)

If you like your drag with a big side order of sci-fi cheese, this is a movie for you. The video host explains it all. Watch. Learn. Thrill.

GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS (2006)

Varla, Evie, and Coco live under the same roof vying for attention, love, and respect. I LOVE THIS MOVIE! It never fails to get me into a good mood.

FEMALE TROUBLE (1974)

Basically ANY John Waters film with mega drag star, DIVINE, should be listed as a drag favorite movie. Female Trouble, I believe, is DIVINE at her best. Just WATCH it and be amazed.

I want to list more drag films, but I'm out of time and energy to post more, for now. The month isn't over yet, so stay tuned. I gotta get out of the computer lab and do some grocery shopping. When I get home I'll put one of these favorite films in the dvd player to make myself smile! Peace and love to you all.
