Outside our small safe place flies Mystery... A snake beneath the forest floor, a whisper: Melusine

In a previous entry here, I mentioned that I've been looking for a painting from the Orientalist/Romantic period depicting a priestess of Bast doing a funerary rite for a cat. The reason why it was so damn hard to find is the artist of the above painting is not often featured as prominently as others of his period. I knew I didn't dream up this image, but it had me chasing it down like mad on and offline. I now know the title and artist:
